My younger daughter Katherine totally surprises me.

When Katherine was younger, she had a hard time making friends. Whenever we went to the park, she clung to my side and refused to go play  with the other girls. I often had to introduce her to a group of girls, and left her to mingle.   After a few minutes, she either was playing by herself or was coming to sit next to me.

Katherine is still shy, when it comes to meeting new people. However, she does have a group of friends she hangs around with at our homeschooling co-op. Out of 6 sixth grade girls, she is friends with 5 of them. The sixth one is shyer than Katherine. The girl is the quietest one in class. During lunch period, she sits with her mom and sister. I rarely see her playing with Katherine and the other girls.

Remembering how Katherine didn't have any friends, I suggested that she should include the girl in the activities. Not getting any responses from Katherine,  I thought my suggestion went into one ear and out the other. Several days went by and I completely forgot about the conversation. However, as we were returning from dinner, Katherine announced that she will not buy anything new until she befriends with the girl. Mind you, this (not buying anything new) is a big commitment for Katherine. She rarely saves her allowances. When she has money, she spends.

Katherine is true to her words. When she went to class on Monday, she saved a seat next to her. Unfortunately, the girl was absent. She'll try it again next week.

What did you learn this week? Blog it and link it to  Musings of a Housewife.

I remember when saying "because I say so..." was enough to satisfy a little boy. However, lately, it doesn't seem like a satisfactory answer to this same lad. What happened? He became a teenager. According to Gary Chapman's The Five Love Languages of Teenagers, I must begin treating him like a teenager instead of a little boy. I must allow him to think his own thoughts, experience his own emotions, have his own dreams, and allowing him to share these with me without receiving my unsolicited assessment. I must learn to help him evaluate his ideas, understand his emotions, and take realistic steps toward accomplishing his goals.

I want my teenager to look back and say that his teen years were the best. Therefore, I am going to make a daily effort of encouraging a friendly atmosphere dialogue rather than the authorative monologue. I will listen without interrupting. Most importantly, I will teach rather than preach.

Sending Mark to an IB hig school has been a blessing. Not only does he get the quality education, his sister Katherine benefits from it as well. While I was homeschooling Mark, I literally pushed Katherine's education aside. I told myself that I would return my attention to her after I was done teaching Mark. The truth was, by the time I finished teaching Mark, I was exhausted and ready to end the day. Poor Katherine, she did not get the quality education that I want for her.

Because Mark is in school this year, Katherine has my undivided attention. She didn't care for it at first, because I am constantly at her side. She also realizes that I expect more from her now, than before.

Instead of doing everything on our own at home, Katherine goes to a co-op group every Monday where she gets an enrichment in science, history, language arts, and arts. She loves being with her friends, and participating in class activties. The rest of the week, she spends her time at home doing assigned school work. Of course, I check her assignment and drill her on other subjects.

One good thing that comes out of this co-op is that Katherine realizes she is smart amongst her peers. For a long time, she thought she was below average. She was comparing herself to her brother, who is 3 grades above her. At one point, she thought she didn't have strong academic skills to be accepted to a IB high school in a few years. However, with this new self confidence, she told me that she is looking forward to follow her brother's footsteps.

Go With the Flow

Knowing that we went out for dinner on Sunday night, I knew there was a slim chance of us going out again on Monday night. Like a child, I tested the water. I told Jeff that I NEEDED to go to the mall for the big Labor Day Sale. I expected him to tell me that I didn't need anything at the mall, or that we needed to save some money.

I was working on Katherine's weekly syllabus, when Jeff came in all dressed. That was my cue that we were going somewhere. Without any questions, I got ready. In my mind, I thought we were running to a hardware store. At the same time, he thought that we were going to the mall.

As we were heading out of our subdivision, he asked me which mall we were going to. Feeling guilty that I had misled him, I slowly told him I didn't need to go to the mall. He wasn't happy at first, nor did he turn the car around. He continued to destination of nowhere. Needless to say, we never went to the mall. We stopped at Sonny's BBQ for lunch/dinner, and spent some family time driving around the county.

To Blog or Not to Blog

The kids and I have gone nonstop for the last three weeks. Today is the first day we had nothing to do. With no commitments, I spent most of my time on facebook and compteplating if I should blog again. I do miss it. On the other hand, I know it will take up most of my time. Maybe I should take one day at a time.

Prince Charming and I spend too much time on the computer. Of course, an apple doesn't fall far from the tree. We noticed the same in our kids. We are not spending enough time as a family, nor the kids are going outside to play. Therefore, Prince Charming and I decided that the whole family is going to decrease their computer usage.

Besides checking on e-mail before church, the computer remained off the whole day. During the day, I had to fight the urge not to come and check on my e-mail, to blog, or to go on facebook. At the end of the day, I am glad that I did it. I accomplished so much. In light of this, and the fact that Prince Charming thinks I am sharing too much information online, I am going to stop blogging for awhile. After this week, this blog will not be accessible.

He gave me the whole afternoon to myself. Saturday morning began with taking the kids to their friends' house. Afterwards, I cleaned the house. The plan was to pick up the kids at 4:00, take The Inquisitor to church for a student weekend performance, and then come home for supper around 6:30.

Around 1:30, Prince Charming had a craving for smoked chicken and ribs. Thinking he was going to return home way before 3:30, he went alone. Well, that short trip lasted until 6:30. He called me around 3:45 to tell me that he was picking up the kids. Instead of returning home and turning back an hour later, he and Minnie decided to wait for Mark.

This was such a blessing in disguise. Minnie had one-on-one time with her daddy, and I had the whole afternoon to myself. What a priceless Valentine's gift. No, I didn't blog all afternoon nor search people on facebook. I included a 3 mile cycling into my rest and recreation. Lastly, I don't have to cook tonight. Prince Charming is trying out his electric smoker. Boy, those chicken smell delicious.

Prince Charming Turns 50

Happy Birthday, my Prince Charming. It is hard to believe that you were 28 when we met. My, how time flies. It has been a blissful 21.5 years. I am looking for many more birthdays together.

Do you remember our first date? We went to Pizza Hut during our study break. Even though you didn't have any food in the fridge, you insisted that I take the remainder of the pizza home.

What about the time you met my parents? We had been going out for a month, and I had not introduced you to Mom and Dad. Dad sensed we were getting serious, and he was concerned about my future with you. Now that you have a daughter, do you understand why it was important for Dad to meet you?

You finally agreed to come over for dinner. After eating Mom's Mongolian Beef, Beef and Broccoli, and fried rice, you realized that no Chinese restaurant will ever come close to Mom's cooking. One more thing, Dad liked you from the start.

My most memorable date with you was when you were 3 hours late. You had been up all night cramming for a test. You went home to take a short nap after the exam. When you woke up, you realized that it was 9:00 P.M. You called to apologized and drove 30 minutes to Mom and Dad's house for a short visit.

It seems like summer of 1987, when we met, was yesterday. You and I have come a long way. However one thing has not change is my love for you. I love you more today than yesterday, but less than tomorrow.

A Night Without the Kids

We welcomed 2009 in Alabama. We spent the first part of the week with my mother, and the remainder with my in-law. Of course, while the kids and I were playing, Prince Charming was doing minor repairs at both houses. We had planned to leave on January 2, but realized that the Sugar Bowl was playing that night.

By prolonging an extra day, the kids spent a night with their cousins. This was the first time both kids were away from us at the same time. Although we enjoyed the quietness at maw maw’s and paw paw’s house, it was too quiet. Without the kids, I felt like Prince Charming and I were dating again and were visiting his parents for the holidays.

I was tempted to call and check on Minnie, but I knew better. Once Minnie heard my voice, she would have wanted me to come and pick her up (been there done that). For everyone’s sake, ( LOL) I had to promise to stay away from the phone. Furthermore, the cousins warned me that they will not answer the phone, if they know it’s me (hee-hee).

I survived 24 hours without my kids. I didn’t receive a phone call during the night. Finally, the kids had a great time with their cousins.

Love Tank

As more friends are getting divorces or going through separations, I begin to wonder about the stability of my marriage. Is Prince Charming's love tank full? Am I daily applying Gary Chapman's 5 emotional love languages: gifts, words of affirmation, acts of service, quality time, and physical touch?

  • Gift giving -Thank God, gift giving is not Prince Charming's love language. This can get expensive. Before he buys his latest toy, he researches it. I can show fill his love tank by supporting him.
  • Word of affirmation- forgiveness. This is so important when we have a disagreement before bedtime. When I am at fault, I ask for forgiveness before I close my eyes. If I don't, Prince Charming tosses and turns throughout the night. This isn't fair for him, especially when he has to rise early.
  • Acts of service- Prince Charming loves an orderly house. His love tank is never full, because I am still in training. I think he has already given up hope (LOL). This is to my advantage. When he gets fed up with the chaos, he starts cleaning.
  • Quality time- Playing Scrabble, our nightly ritual after dinner. My love tank is also filled.
  • Physical touch- Kissing him good-bye before he leaves the house.

Home Sweet Home

What were we thinking when we decided to return to Florida on the Sunday after Thanksgiving? Had we lost our minds? A twelve-hour drive turned into a 16-hour trip. It seemed like everyone was heading south on I-75. We were literally crawling on the highway. At one point, the speed limit was 35 miles per hour. After an hour of stop and go, Prince Charming decided to use the back road. We returned to I-75 after 6:00. By that time, the traffic improved slightly. We reached our home sweet home at midnight. It's nice to be home again. Thank you, Lord for bringing us home safely.

Were you on I-75? How long did it take you to reach your destination?

Happy Veteran's Day

I am proud to be the daughter of the late Major Ronald C. Bethard. My family is filled with heroes who put their lifes on the line to protect our country.

One advantage of homeschooling is I can prolong Minnie's childhood. If my fifth grader was in a public school, her days playing with Webkinz, dolls, dressing up, etc. would probably be over. She probably would be interested in boys, and would know more about the world, than I care for her to. Thank you Lord, for allowing my daughter to enjoy her childhood for another day.

Nancy Drew gives a full detail to Agent Minnie, as she observes the family from afar.

It is such a joy to see the girls using their imaginations.

Whew!! I am glad the weekend is over. It was hard not to blog for two days. I must confess, though, I read a couple of blogs now and then. On the other hand, I am so glad that I had the discipline to do it. I had every intention of that extra time working on the kids' syllabus for this week. It didn't get done, because I spent most of the day playing Scrabble with my Prince.

Although we were at home, all of us were doing our own thing. The Inquisitor played on the computer and football games; Minnie worked on crafts; I did laundry in between Scrabble games; and Prince worked and watched Alabama vs. Tennessee.

I don't remember the last time we did something together. I voiced my thoughts and the Prince took us out to dinner on Sunday. Afterwards, the boys went window shopping at Circuit City. Prince checked out the flat screen televisions. The Inquisitor tried out new games on the Wii. Minnie and I spent our time at the Learning Express shoppping for a birthday gift. I am glad Prince and The Inquisitor got to spend some one-on-one time without us girls. Likewise, Minnie didn't have to share me with her brother. The best part of this whole Sunday outing was our Sunday Drive to a nowhere destination. It was nice just being together in the car, away from distractions. This precious time together will be just a memory sooner than I want and I am going to miss this.

It's a joy to see Minnie playing with her friends. She has 3 close friends whom she sees weekly. Her three close friends are very different in personalities. The first girl likes to be creative in the kitchen, The second girl likes to play dress-up. Lastly, the third girl loves to play with Webkinz and Build-A-Bear. All three girls bring out Minnie's talents.

I Love My Hubby

I have been seeing this tag around blog world, and decided I would do it. You name five things you love about your hubby, and then tag five people. I tag anyone who would like to do this.

I love my husband because (1) He is faithful ; (2) He sacrifices his time everyday at work, so I can stay home with our children; (3) He uses his vacation time to do some repair work at my Mom's house; (4) He never belittles me in front of our children, nor behind closed doors; and (5) After twenty one years together (dating and marriage), he still thinks of me first, before he thinks of himself.

Date Night (Sort Of)

One thing I fell in love with the Prince is that he is very competitive when it comes to board games. He has no mercy. Likewise, I am the same way. When we were newlyweds and we had time on our hands, we played at least a Scrabble game every night. Our game night ended as our lives got busier.

Well, Scrabble night is back. We literally ignore our children and spend a couple of hours playing the game on the computer (it is way more fun than the board game). There's not doubt, our competitiveness is still intact. I love this time together, instead of me blogging in one room and he watching TV alone. Forget about the dishes. They can wait.

Have you read Pam's Mondays on Mothering? There is no doubt that her daughter looks like her. For my first M.O.M., I am going to follow her lead and show you pictures of me and Mom (top left picture); Minnie and me (top right picture). What do you think? Do we look alike?

The bottom left picture is Mom and Minnie, and the the bottom right is a picture of my grandma and me. Do you see the similiarities?

Grandma Ly and Mom, were a young brides to foreigners. After marriage, They migrated to their spouses' countries. They vowed to return to their native countries to visit their mothers. Due to finacial circumstances, Grandmother Ly never returned to China. Mom returned to Vietnam twenty years later, but Grandmother Ly had already passed away.

Grandmother Ly and Mom's were brave women. I wouldn't have been brave to leave my native country nor Mom behind. .I can't imagine not having Mom around to share the planning of my wedding or the births of The Inquisistor and Minnie. I regret not knowing Grandmother Ly. However, I am glad the kids have the opportunity to create memoriable memories with Mom.

Thank you, Lord for Mom's presence in my life. I am grateful that I get to see her at least twice a year. With a phone call, she is never far away.

Happy birthday, Minnie

Dear Minnie,

11 years ago today, Dad rushed us to the hospital. Judging the way I was feeling, I knew you were ready to see the world. If the train had stopped us, you would have been delivered in the car. Needless to say, Dad was happy that didn't happen. Once we arrived at the hospital, there was nothing holding you back. We arrived at the hospital at 6:30 AM, and I was holding you at 6:45.
