Speaking from the Heart

Since we are not having school in April. I was hoping a month of rest. No luck. Our April activity calendar is already filled with: going to see a play, going skating, competing in a spelling bee, celebrating Mark's 12th birthday, and having a visit from grandma. Nevertheless, we did manage to schedule a couple of days of "down time" between activities. Mark, Katherine, and I went to Busch Gardens on the first week of our vacation. Did you know Busch Gardens is the best place to read a long novel. Since my poor old body can't take wild rides, I would carry along a good book, find a shady spot, and read. Because the waiting time for popular rides are 30 minutes or longer, I can read a couple of chapters before the kids return.

After homeschooling for 6 years, we made some changes . We decided to homeschool all year-round. We will take a long break ( a month to be exact) in April, August, and September. The last week of March was the longest school week. Instead of focusing on finishing the assignments, we took time out to go see A Night at the Museum and went on a field trip.

Regardless of extra activities, Mark and Katherine knew they had to finish their work before they could go on a school hiatus. I could have shortened their lessons, but that would be going against my belief of "not bailing kids out" nor did I want them to have a life's lesson on procrastination. Thru endurance and determination, Mark and Katherine finished their assignments. Katherine worked diligently on Saturday and Sunday nights, so she could commence her vacation on Monday. Mark finished his algebra assignment on Monday. Their pride of accomplishments radiated from their faces, as they jumped up and down screaming," Yeah no school for 30 days!!"

Moments like this is possible through Jeff's love and support. He works long hours, so I can stay home. I could have worked, doubled our income, and bought anything our hearts desire, but these things are not important to Jeff. Having a nurtured and loving mom for his children is more important than a mom, who is pursuing a career.
