You're Gonna Miss This Moment: Waiting for the Bus
6 comments Posted by Speaking from the Heart at Saturday, October 31, 2009Having Mark in a public high school has been an adjusment for the family. We can't go on a vacation according to our schedule. Katherine doesn't like the fact that she is constantly under the microscope, because she is my only student.
Nevertheless, the biggest challange is Mark having to wake up at 5:30 every morning, and to catch the bus at 6:20. He and I head to the bus stop by 6:10. I cherish the 10 minutes Mark and I have together before the bus comes. There is no distraction (phone, computer, sister, etc), just me and my son. We would sit in silence, while he catches a little more sleep. On the other hand, we often talk about school, family, girlfriend, or whatever is his our mind. In a couple of years, he will have his driver's license and I am going to miss this moment.

Not me, I am not acting like a teenager who can't be away from my boyfriend. Prince Charming has been out of town since last Thursday. He was informed that he can't leave until the project is done. That can mean a week from last Thursday. The best part about being away is our children can see how much Prince Charming and I still love each other. The Inquisitor told me that it was nice to hear me and his dad chatting on the phone for half an hour, like him and his girlfriend. Not me, I didn't rant and rave about Inquisitor's English poor test score. It turned out to be a "B', instead of a "C".

Thankful Thursday: Mom, Overcoming the Odds, Marriage, Perserverance
4 comments Posted by Speaking from the Heart at Thursday, October 22, 2009
As we get older, so do our parents. Some of us are fortunate to still have our parents around, while many of us have one or both parents who have gone Home. My dad went Home to be with the LORD nine years ago. Not a day goes by that I don't think of him.
A high school friend wasn't as fortunate as me. She lost her mom this week, due to brain tumor. I am thankful that my friend and her brother had an extra year with their mom, despite what the doctor said.
I am thankful for friends who have overcome cancer. I am also thankful for God's comfort to those who are in the process of healing.
With friends going through the process of separations and divorces, I am thankful for my strong marriage.
I am thankful for my perseverance in homeschooling my children. Because of my high expectations , I am reaping the rewards. Mark is making A's and B's in IB (college prep) classes. Katherine is the top of her class.

Friday Show and Tell: Redecorating Katherine' s Room
4 comments Posted by Speaking from the Heart at Friday, October 16, 2009I purchased this antique make-up vanity 25 plus years ago at Salvation Army. The vanity must be about 70 years old. For the longest time, It was ugly brown. When we decided to redo Katherine's room this summer, our dear friend thought it was a great idea to paint the vanity ecru and add shells around the mirror. Now, for more pictures of the new room.

Making Your Home Sing: Understanding a Teenager
8 comments Posted by Speaking from the Heart at Monday, October 12, 2009
I remember when saying "because I say so..." was enough to satisfy a little boy. However, lately, it doesn't seem like a satisfactory answer to this same lad. What happened? He became a teenager. According to Gary Chapman's The Five Love Languages of Teenagers, I must begin treating him like a teenager instead of a little boy. I must allow him to think his own thoughts, experience his own emotions, have his own dreams, and allowing him to share these with me without receiving my unsolicited assessment. I must learn to help him evaluate his ideas, understand his emotions, and take realistic steps toward accomplishing his goals.
I want my teenager to look back and say that his teen years were the best. Therefore, I am going to make a daily effort of encouraging a friendly atmosphere dialogue rather than the authorative monologue. I will listen without interrupting. Most importantly, I will teach rather than preach.

In honor of Katherine's birthday, I am re posting "We're Having Twins" story. I changed the title, because I didn't want my friends on facebook think that I am having twins.
Jeff was about to bite into his Whopper, when he received this message. Jeff was so shocked that he stared at his pager for a long time. His boss Mike asked him what was the matter. Jeff showed Mike the message. After the shock, Jeff said he was happy. He told Mike that we have always wanted 2 kids. In the mean time, I was feeling guilty for my childish prank, I texted him back saying it was a joke.
It's hard to believe that this little girl is turning twelve years old on Saturday. The years are flying by.

It's Katherine's Turn to Shine
4 comments Posted by Speaking from the Heart at Friday, October 02, 2009Because Mark is in school this year, Katherine has my undivided attention. She didn't care for it at first, because I am constantly at her side. She also realizes that I expect more from her now, than before.
Instead of doing everything on our own at home, Katherine goes to a co-op group every Monday where she gets an enrichment in science, history, language arts, and arts. She loves being with her friends, and participating in class activties. The rest of the week, she spends her time at home doing assigned school work. Of course, I check her assignment and drill her on other subjects.
One good thing that comes out of this co-op is that Katherine realizes she is smart amongst her peers. For a long time, she thought she was below average. She was comparing herself to her brother, who is 3 grades above her. At one point, she thought she didn't have strong academic skills to be accepted to a IB high school in a few years. However, with this new self confidence, she told me that she is looking forward to follow her brother's footsteps.
